John HEYDON of Baconsthorpe

Born: ABT 1416, Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, England

Died: 27 Sep 1479

Buried: Norwich Cathedral

Notes: A Lawyer 'of Eminence' in the reigns of Henry VI and Edward IV whereby he much advanced the estate and fortunes of his family, BET 1431 and 1433 Recorder of Norwich, Norfolk, England. Built Heydon's Chapel in Norwich Cathedral. Moved his family to Baconsthorpe in 1447 where his father William had already moved and had land and estates. The Heydon families sold their estates in and around Heydon. Began the building of Baconsthope in 1475 but died in 1480 with only the tower completed. In 1447 he was executor of the will of Lady Joan Bardolf, and to that of Sir John Clifton, Knight, Buckingham Castle. In 1464 appointed by the will of Lady Isabel Morley counselor to her executors. In 1472, Walter Lyhert, Bishop of Norwich, left him by will his cup, that he daily used, of silver gilt, with the cover.

From letters written and published by the Paston family of Norfolk, it would seem that John was not always a well-liked person, as he would sometimes pay bribes to get whatever he wanted. The Paston Papers show the distaste for some of the Heydons by some of the Pastons, and yet their families continued to intermarry with the titled money. In those documents says that some other Heydon even lost his home with the Lord Sheriff being ordered to throw the entire family out on the streets for that other Heydon getting into a sword fight during the course of a banquet feast, in the hall, and in the presence of the Queen "to the greate dystresse of the Heydon familie".

John's will was proved the same year of his death in 1480 possessed of the lordships of Baconsthorpe, Loschel, Boschem, Broches in Salthouse, Loverds in Heydon, Saxlingham, Oulton Hall and Leches in Oulton, Thursford, Walsingham Magna, Bakenham's in Carlton Road, Hocham Parva, Laundes in Tibenham, Pentsthor- and Hackford with Reepham, called Haydons Manor, there. Some of these may have been "manors" which were areas of land sometimes with cottages within a village. Sometimes a manor overlapped into two parishes and individual parishes were often made up of more than one manor. John was buried in a chapel that he built for a burial place for himself and family, on the south side of the cathedral, in Norwich, joining to the present consistory on the west, now in ruins. He and his family have been great benefactors of this cathedral, as their arms in many places testify. By his last will he gave to the prior and convent all that they owed him, (he forgave their indebtedness to him) on condition that they erect a tomb for him.

Buried: Norwich Cathedral, under an altar-tomb

Notes: Knight of the Bath at the coronation of Henry VIII. 1516 Repurchased forfeited lands of West Wickham, Baston, Keston, and Soutcourt, in Kent. 1520 served under Henry VIII, one of the Commanders on the Field of the Cloth of Gold. 1522 Sent by Henry to meet the Emperor Carlos V at Dover. 1520 Received from Francois I the noted Shield, executed by Benvenuto Cellini, preserved in the armory at Windsor Castle and their most valuable piece in the collection. In 1531 Sir John Heydon, Knt., Catherine his wife, and Christopher Heydon, Knt., settled the manor of Welholmes in Larling on Sir Thomas Jermyn, Knt., and the manors of Roudham and Great Hockham; also in 1539, when John sold the manor of New Hall to Sir Thomas Jermyn, Knt. Sir John lived to a great age, outliving his own son Christopher, so that Christopher’s son and namesake had to wait until his grandfather’s death before succeeding to the extensive property in north-east Norfolk and the manors elsewhere in that county and in Kent. According to Blomefield (Hs. of Norfolk) was buried 'under an altar tomb in the north aisle of this church, now deprived of its brass plated, but these arms are still remaining: Quarterly, argent and gules, a cross engrailed counterchanged HEYDON quartering WARREN and OLDTON; and impaling WILLOUGHBY...with the crest of HEYDON a talbot passant, ermine, and motto, 'Regarde que suyst De Vertue Null Male.'" Blomefield blazons the arms of WILLOUGHBY... There is no trace of the crest or motto remaining but high up on the east wall of the south aisle is another shield, from its shape and size evidently from the dexter side of this slab, bearing: - HEYDON quartering WARREN and OULTON (same as dexter side of I).

Died: 10 Dec 1579, Baconsthorpe, Norfolkshire, England

Buried: South aisle Chapel, Baconsthorpe church, Norfolkshire, England

Notes: 1551 Inheritied his grandfather's estates because his older brother was deceased. Old maps show that his domain extended from Baconsthorp to the sea and, on the coast, from Holt to Cromer. Had three wives in succession. He was held in great esteem and veneration for his many excellent qualities, particularly for his justice, charity and remarkable hospitality, equal to his ample estate. He is said to have entertained thirty head, or master shepherds of his own flocks at a Christmas dinner at Baconsthorpe. He was known as the great housekeeper in the county. He was married three times. In conjunction with his second wife Temperance, he granted the lands of Patslee Manor to Cains College, Cambridge, and died possessed of very large estates. Blomefield also states that in the south aisle 'on a tomb are the effigies of Sir Christopher, his two wives and children with the quartered coat of HEYDON and the arms of DRURY, and or, three lions passant in pale sable CAREW'. He caused the entails on his estates to be broken, apparently from a sense of their injustice, and so divided them among his children. In his will he gives "to my daughter, Hassette, a gilt cup, which I received from the Queen for a New Years gift".

In some accounts called Robert De Haydon, who appears to have been the first to change the spelling of the first syllable by inserting an "a" instead of an "e" which thence forward distinguishes the Devon Line from the Norfolk Line and all other Heydon lines. He settled at Boughwood, an estate in the parish of Harpford, near Ottery St. Mary, County of Devon, near which the family afterwards continued. He lived at Boughwood in the 19th year of King Edward I. Robert deeded this estate to his new infant son Henry, born in 1291. Robert also died in 1291. John HAYDON of Cadhay

Born: 1512

Died: 9 Mar 1587

Buried: Ottery St. Mary Church, Devon, England

Notes: his wife was heiress of lands of Cadhay, and they came into possession of the lands of Cadhay, where John builded the Cadhay Manor house with stones taken from a ruined abbey, (started construction about 1545), and made it a very fair and gentile dwelling, and enlarged the demises thereof with many alterations.

John was a highly successful and wealthy lawyer, he became eminent for his skill and knowledge therein. He was first a member, and after that a bencher, of Lincoln Inn. He obtained from Henry VIII a charter for incorporating the parish of Ottery St. Mary in this county that was on the transfer from the Romanists to the Protestants, and was the first governor of that corporation himself. He procured, 1536, that King letters patent for the founding of a grammar school in that town also, and was very instrumental in getting it well endowed. He was Steward to Bishop Veysey and legal adviser to the Exeter City Council. At Exeter is the old Guild Hall, and on a ponderous roll of parchment, grants of property in real estate by Henry VIII to John Haydon of Cadhay, dated 1545, bearing the king's sign manual. Also, conveyances by this John Haydon of portions of this property at that early day. An important fact that they noticed is that in these legal documents the name is spelled in several different ways, viz.; Haidon, Haydon, Heydon and Hayden.

A little below his house at Cadhay, the two rivers of Tale and Otter meet; where, especially upon great rains and floods, they made a rapid stream, and yielded a dangerous passage to the traveler that way. This current, was this gentleman pleased at his own proper charges, to crown with a fair stone bridge of several arches. This bridge, the scene of a battle in one of the civil wars, remained until 1845, when a great flood swept it away.

John Haydon is the first Haydon buried in Ottery St Mary Church. Besides his monument, a large tablet, bearing a long inscription to his memory in Latin verse. As he had no children of his own, left Cadhay to his Grand Nephew, Robert Haydon, the son of his nephew, Thomas, who was the son of his oldest brother, also named Thomas.

Died 1582; Will (PCC 14 Butts) 25 Nov; proved 28 Nov 1582. As he had no children, he therefore left legacies of more than 3000 pounds for the relief of the poor, also money to be loaned to enterprising young men at a low rate of interest, besides many other benefactions. This John is most likely buried in the church of St. Michael, London.
