Notes: Served for ten years as alderman, first in Aldersgate Ward and later in Cheap Ward. He was chosen Lord Mayor in 1588 and died in office in early May 1589. His will, dated 3 May 1589 was proved on 16 May of that year. (At that time, the Lord Mayor of London was elected on Michaelmas Day, 29 Sep, and assumed office on 28 Oct) (Beaven, v.1, pp. 5, 102, 341; v.2, pp. xxviii, 40; Remembrancia, p.4) Sir Richard Martin, a member of the Goldsmiths' Company, served as alderman 1578-1602, and was chosen to finish Sir Martin Calthorpe's term of office as Lord Mayor. A Catholic and London lawyer, Edward Bolton, wrote a treatise in 1629 that defended those such as himself who worked for a living. He was critical of those who glorified the idle gentry. He held up for emulation Martin Calthorpe, who started out as a draper's apprentice, became mayor of London, and to whose skills even Queen Elizabeth had paid homage:"Queen Elizabeth acknowledged Martin Calthorpe, the Lord Mayor of London, who started as apprentice. I pray to resemble the worthies of this city, out of whatever obscure parentage, than being descended of great nobles, to fall by vice far beneath the reckoning of the poorest prentiser..." (From: Edward Bolton, The Cities Advocate). Martin Calthorpe and the powerful trade overseer Sir John Smythe "the Customer" (1558-1625) and Sir Richard Martin (Turkey Company founders) and Thomas Cordell, a co-founder of the Venice Company, with Thomas Pullyson, William Towerson, Thomas Aldersey, Thomas Starkey, Sir George Barne (d. 1593); were supporters of Edmund Fenton of the Muscovy Company (who had married Thomasine, daughter of Benjamin Gonson the naval administrator of England) visited the Moluccas and the Spice Islands in 1583. Fenton made a voyage partly of discovery, partly of plunder, with the backing of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester; Sir Phillip Sydney and William Cecil.

Notes: Her husband, Sir Martin Barnham of Hollingbourne, Knight, was Sheriff of Kent in 1598. The patent of nobility granted to Sir Martin was the second of three known to have been granted by the Crown to members of the Barnham family in England. Sir Martin was knighted at Whitehall on 23 Jul 1603, by James I (reigned 1603-1625). In 1569 Francis and Martin Barnham were granted the reversion of Pendlestone mills, the small tithes and Easter dues of St. Leonard's, and profits of the spiritual jurisdiction of the Deans of Saint Mary Magdalen, Bridgnorth. The rest of the deanery estate was granted in 1579 to Sir Christopher Hatton, who immediately sold it to Rowland Hayward and John Lacy. The reversion of Morville prebend was acquired in 1554 by Thomas Reeve and George Cotton, who then sold it to William Acton of Aldenham. Alveley prebend, which had been leased to William Gatacre in 1561, was granted to the Barnhams in 1569. ( 'Colleges of secular canons: Bridgnorth, St Mary Magdalen', A History of the County of Shropshire: Volume 2 (1973), pp. 123-28.) Martin was freed of his apprenticeship 3 Jun 1572 by patrimony. The arms of Sir Martin are blazoned as 'Quarterly, 1st and 4th sable a cross engrailed between four crescents argent, 2nd and 3rd azure a phaeon proper.' The crest is a dragon's head argent; the motto is Per Crucem ad Lumen -- Through the Cross to the Light. Sir Martin lived much of his life in the village of Hollingbourne, near Maidstone in County Kent, England. His place of residence was Hollingbourne Parsonage, which he bought for £1,110. He built a new house in 1609, just a year before his death. Historic All Saints Church, in Hollingbourne, contains an ambitious monument to Sir Martin which is inscribed: "Sacred to the memory of Sir Martin Barnham. Sprung from the old Southampton family of Barnham, who married Ursula, daughter of Robert Rudstone, of Bouton, Monchelsey, and had two daughters and one son. The Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family refers to Sir Martin's (1st) wife as Ursula Wotton, while Burke and the inscription quoted above call her Ursula Rudstone. Noah G. Barnum, in The Barnum Family, calls her Miss Hudston. On her death, he married Judith, the daughter of Sir Martin Calthorpe, Lord Mayor of London, by whom he had five sons and five daughters. He was a man on every side of gentle birth, most happy in the extreme piety of his life and death alike; on whom God of the boundless riches of His mercy poured (piled upon him) of this world's gifts of nature, Grace and Honor, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. He died 12 Dec 1610, aged 60 years". Sir Martin is buried in St. Clement's Church, Eastcheap, London.

Notes: the family was in financial difficulties, although Elizabeth Riches was a heiress in her own right, her husband had to apply to the House of Lords in 1623 for a private act enabling him to sell more land "for the preferment of his younger children and payment of his debts". In 1639 Samuel Puckett was a witness for Martin Calthorpe in his defence against Edward Haylett's claims to the manor of [Sea] Palling. These depositions were made "at the sign of the Dolphin in the City of Norwich". The manor seems to have been part of the jointure of Elizabeth Calthorpe née Smith, Martin's mother, since, according to the witnesses, Elizabeth Calthorpe was accustomed to collect the rents of the manor herself, or send her son George to do it for her. She also presided over the manor court. Among the Acts of Parliament for 2 Nov 1624 appears the following: An Act to enable Martin Calthorpe, Esquire, to make Sale of certain Lands, for Preferment of his Younger Children, and Payment of his Debts. Notes: was the last member of his family to reside at Cockthorp. His son James granted the estate at Aldeby to Henry Calthorpe and it passed down through his line. 8 Sep 1609, the man and lordship alias Aldeby Hall and the meadow and pasturage of the clerk of Thorpe was purchased by John Thurton of Brome, in the same county, gent. Mr. Thurton died very soon after the purchase, and for the better assuring this property to his heirs an indenturee tripartite was made Oct 1st, 1609 between Edward Parker, Lord Morley &c (from whom the manor had been bought), and Christopher Calthorpe of Stirston, in Norfolk, esquire, and his wife, Maud, one of the daughters and co-heirs of the above Jno. Thurton, gent; and Edward Hanchett of Uphall in the co. of Herford, Esq.; and Elizabeth his wife, another daughter and co-heiress of the second part--and Sir James Calthorpe of Cockthorpe, in Norfolk, Knight, and Thomas Hanchett, Esq. of the 3rd part. On 10 Jun 1610, by another deed, Edward and Elizabeth Hanchett sold their moiety to Christopher Calthorpe for Lb.1600."
