SACKVILLE

Notes: 3rd son. Educated Inner Temple, admitted 11 Feb 1540 at the suit of his brother Richard and was pardoned all offices and vacations on payment of 40 shillings. It is possible that he was intended to occupy the family estates in Essex, as his father had once done; in 1544 he joined his father in buying from Richard Duke a property in county called "Le Almarye" in West Bergholt. Three years later, after the accession of Edward VI, Sackville made a brief incursion into public life when, together with his brother Richard and his brother-in-law Nicholas Pelham, he entered the first Parliament on the reign. His election at East Grinstead was undoubtedly the work of his father, who was sheriff at the time and whose home at Withyham was some six miles from the borough, which he himself had represented in the last Parliament but one. The career thus begun was to be cut short by death, although how quickly is not known. A terminal date is provided by the list of Members as revised for the final session of the Parliament, which began in Jan 1552: on this list he is replaced by George Darrell. No will has been found and it is not known whether Sackville had married.

Notes: Knight of the Garter. Succeeded his brother in 1524. Chamberlain to Queen Henrietta Maria and later Chamberlain of the household. Attended Charles I at Oxford. Clarendon describes him: "his person was beautiful and graceful and vigorous, his wit pleasant, sparkling, and sublime, and his other parts of learning of that lustre that he could not miscarry the vices he had were of the age, which was not stubborn enough to condemn or resist". Portrait at Longleat. Member of the Privy Council from 1626. Married Mary, dau. and heir of Sir George Curzon, and governess to the children of Charles I. Succeeded to the earldom, 1624.
