Notes: Abbess of Denny. She went to live with her nephew, Sir George, when her convent was closed in 1537 under the Dissolution of the Monasteries, making 25 nuns homeless. She brought with her a dole-gate, through which help was given to the poor, and upon which her name is carved. This can still beseen today in the Dining-Room.

Notes: son and heir, twenty-one years old at his father's death, Justice of the Peace for Warwickshire, from 2 R. III. till towards his death. Seneshal to the Duke of Lancaster. Privy councillor under Henry VII; Robert made the Park at Coughton, inclosing therewith a certain common ground called Wikewood, whereunto he afterwards added Samburneheath, and Spiney's Leys, lying within the said Lordship of Samburne; and the same year was a Commander in the King's army at the battle of Stoke. In 1494 he received summons, with divers other persons of quality, to appear before the King in person upon the feast day of All Saints the same year, to receive the order of Knighthood, upon advancement of Henry, the King's second son, to the Dukedom of York, and created him Knight of the Bath, in honour whereof these were to be made Knights of that order. That he was a man of singular piety, the sundry bequests, contained in his testament, do sufficiently manifest; and of no less devotion, as may seem by his pilgramage to the Holy Land, which in 1519 (having settled his estate) he undertook; but died beyond sea in that journey.

Notes: Bess was nineteen when she first appeared at Court. She was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Trhockmorton, Queen Elizabeth's first Ambassador to Paris, and her brother was also a courtier. Both their parents were dead and they relied on the Court for their livelihood. Bess was intelligent, forthright, passionate and courageous. Though Raleigh was in his early forties, the two fell madly in love. In the summer of 1591, Bess discovered she was pregnant and they secretly married. They were together, but catastrophe loomed. Raleigh's young wife, however, could no longer keep her pregnancy secret. Bess gave birth to a baby boy who was quickly put out to a wet nurse so she could resume her place as Lady-in-Waiting. When Sir Walter returned from the sea, he arranged for the baby and nurse to go to Durham House. However, on 31st May 1592, his marriage was discovered. The Queen had not granted permission for such a match and Raleigh was promptly arrested. Elizabeth expected Walter and Bess to sue for a pardon and, while their fate lay in the balance, she even confirmed the lease of Sherborne.

However, the couple refused such a humiliating course of action and by 7 Aug, that same year, the Queen's favourite had fallen into five long years of disgrace. The couple's first child must have died, but Bess was soon pregnant again and their son, Wat, was born in 1593.

Said to have carried the shriveled head of her husband in a red leather bag until the end of her days.

Notes: Settled permanently in Paris in 1582, and served as an agent of Mary, Queen of Scots. He was betrothed to Mary, youngest daughter of George Allen, brother of Cardinal Allen, but died before the marriage could take place.

Notes: English conspirator, who plotted the unsuccessful attempt to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I in 1583. The nephew of one of the Queen's diplomats, he was educated at Oxford, visited Europe, where he conspired with Catholic exiles, and returned in 1583 with a plot to restore papal authority. His brother Thomas Throckmorton, along with his brothers-in-law Sir William Catesby and Sir Thomas Tresham, were amongst the leading rebels. The conspiracy was uncovered, he was tortured into a full confession, and executed.
