CHICHESTER FAMILY

According to an English historian, the name originated ABT the second century B.C. with the Roman occupation of Britain. A Roman general by the name of Cissa established a campground under his own name, the Roman name for camp being "caester" (pronounced chester). As the Romans withdrew from the walled camp the area became a fiefdom for a feudal lord or land owner and was called "CISSA'S CAESTER." It was a valuable possession, holding stragegic importance as well as being surrounded by fertile land. As the Anglo-Saxon kings, who succeeded the Roman occupation, began to unify the country, the fiefdom became a valuable pawn to be awarded to men of valor.

From the DOOMSDAY BOOK we learn that Engeler held of the king two hides of land (a hide being an English land measure equalling enough land to support a family, usually ABT 120 acres) in the manor of CICESTR' (a place) in the county of Sussex; and he also held one carucate of land (ABT 100 acres) in the same manor in his own right, as likewise divers lands in Mendon, in the same county, which he formery held of king Harold (the Anglo-Saxon king who was defeated at Hastings by William the Conqueror), and he also held two hides of land of Adelisa, wife of Radolphus de Thellebroe, in Standune, in the county of Bedford, and also divers lands of Ernulph, in the county of Somerset, all of which he was seised at the time of the Doomsday Survey, A.D. 1080.)

William the Conqueror bought Engeler's allegiance by allowing him to keep the land that he had held under the Anglo-Saxon king.

Engeler's successor to the lands in the manor of Chichester was Henry De Cicestr' (pronounce C's as Ch.) The name by now had evolved from Cissa's Caester to CIESTR' and was soon to assume the present day form of CHICHESTER, with CHIDESTER, CHITTESTER, CHEDESTER being the most common derivatives of the name.

The first on record is Walleran de Cirencester (thought to be delineated from Cirencester of Gloucestershire) said to be descended from a brother of Robert of Cirencester, alias Chichester, dean of Salisbury and consecrated in 1128 Bishop of Exeter.

Robert CHICHESTER (Bishop of Exeter)

Dean of Salisbury, was appointed to the vacant see of Exeter at the Council holden at Northampton in Apr 1138, and was consecrated on the 18 Dec that year by the Primate Theobald, whom he accompanied to Rome after the Christmas holidays, as we learn from Simeon of Durham. Godwin conjectures that our Bishop proceeded thither on a pilgrimage, and with the view of enriching himself with many relics; but the truth is he went in compliment to his Metropolitan, who received from the Pope on this occasion, for himself and his successors, Archbishops of Canterbury, the title of "Apostolicæ Sedis Legatus". A deed of Bishop Chichester, dated Sunday, 15 Aug 1148, by which he appropriates to the Canons of his cathedral the churches of Brankescombe, St. Mary Church, Dawlish, East Teignmouth, Sidbury, Staverton, and Stoke, towards their better support. This deed or gift was laid by the donor on St. Peter's altar in this cathedral in the presence of Patrick, Bishop of Limerick, and of the clergy and citizens of Exeter. From another document which he addressed to Walter, one of his Canons, we learn that the Bishop had brothers of the name of Peter and Phillip. They also witness a deed of Chapter. We have printed in the 'Monasticon' of the diocese, under the articles of Tywardreth, and St. James and St. Mary Magdalene's Priories, several of the Prelate's Acts; and below we insert the confirmation of the property of the See of Exeter, which he obtained, on 14 Mar 1152, from Pope Eugenius III, that special friend and admirer of the English nation. During the following year he witnessed the agreement of King Stephen and Henry Plantagenet, "de Successione Regni Angliæ" (Rymer's 'Foedera,' tom. i. p. 13). In his latter days the Bishop, as his contemporary Henry de Huntingdon informs, was visited with blindness. Dying, according to the 'Tywardreth Obituary,' on 28 Mar, 1155, he is supposed to have been buried on the south side of the high altar of his cathedral. Arms: Checky or and gules, a chief vairy.

He had one son, William, the father of Sir John Cirencester, whose son, Richard, having the name of Cirencester, fixed upon Chichester which has continued the surname of the family.

Notes: Vivian, in the Visitation of Devon, 1620, in error calls her father "of Brightley". Examination of page 176, as stated in Vivian's Pollard pedigree, reveals he is "of Hall". Vivian confuses the entries herewith. On page 598 of Vivian, the Pollard of Way pedigree calls her Agnes and marrying Robert Pollard. Also Vivian states see "page 176", the Chichester page. Also on Pollard, Vivian states she is the daughter of Richard Chichester (correct), but says of him "of Brightley" rather than "of Hall" on page 176. No other Richard Chichester can be found with a daughter named Agnes. In fact no other Agnes is recorded anywhere on that page 176, except as a daughter of Richard Chichester. To add insult to injury, Vivian on the Chichester page 176 states that Richard's daughter "Anne" married Robert Pollard and "Agnes" married William Strachley. The correction pages of Chichester and Pollard did not catch these discrepancies. Thus said, the Pollard pedigree is followed and the Chichester page 176 has had the sisters Anne and Agnes reversed. Their father Richard Chichester remains as stated in the main "CHICHESTER OF HALL" page 176 "of Hall", which is Of "Hall Estate", Bishop's Tawton, Devonshire, England. All Chichester males prior to this entry, show no place or residence. Later males came into possession of manors or estates e.g "OF RALEIGH" by Married settlements from wives' fathers or by purchase.
