Notes: Appointed keeper of the privy seal and commissioned with William de la Pole, earl, then duke of Suffolk, and Sir Robert Roos as ambassador to conclude a peace or a truce with France. A truce was arranged in May as was a betrothal of Margaret of Anjou to King Henry. Consecrated Bishop of Chichester, 6 Feb 1446; held living of Harrietaham, Kent.

Adam, with the Duke of Suffolk, was regarded with hatred by the populace for the surrender of Maine and Anjou and the loss of a great part of Normandy. On 9 Dec 1449 he resigned the privy seal. Adam then went to Portsmouth, where a force was gathered for the relief of Normandy who were out of control and committing excesses, to pay them, their wages. A dispute arose about the sailors wages and Adam was accused of docking their wages and speaking haughtily. The sailors said he was a traitor who had sold Normandy to the French, and fell upon him beating him so severely that he died on 9 Jan 1450.

Notes: second son. Little is known about Molyneux, a lawyer, who was returned for Liverpool after a contest through the influence of his father, crown lessee of the lordship. It is likely that the Mr. Molyneux referred to in the journals in Oct 1566 was John Molyneux of Thorpe, in which case no parliamentary activity is known for the Liverpool man. He lost his room in the Middle Temple by discontinuance in 1573, was fined £5 for not acting as Autumn reader in 1575, and again for failing to read at Lent 1516. Like other members of his family, he was a Catholic, described as ‘very evil’ in 1591. His will has not been found and it is not known when he died.

Notes: little is known about Molyneux, returned to Parliament in 1584 by the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster. He has been confused with three namesakes, one of Melling Wood, another his nephew, and a third the distant relation who sat for Nottinghamshire in 1563. The Liverpool Member was a Catholic alleged to have taken an oath in 1568, together with his father and three sisters, declaring the Pope supreme head of the church. He was therefore presumably the John Molyneux, justice of the peace, of whom it was said in 1591 that his wife and family were ‘very evilly disposed’, and that he retained ‘the most notorious papists’ in his service. However, this could have referred to the nephew, younger son of his elder brother William.

The younger Sir John accompanied Raleigh on his voyages to Guiana in 1595 and Cadiz in 1596. In the latter expedition he was knighted by the Earl of Essex. Married to Alice Molyneux, he died without issue in 1608, leaving Compton Castle to his brother Raleigh Gilbert.

Notes: started a cadet branch of the family, Molyneux of Haughton. Thomas was made a Knight Banneret by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, 24 Jul 1482, probably after the completion of the Treaty of Fotheringay near Edinburgh. Thomas was Attorney General to King Edward IV (so sometime between 1461 and 1483, but the source does not specify exactly when) and also one of the Privy Council to Henry VII.
