Notes: Nicholas had yet to reach his majority when his father John died. In 1491 he was still not 21 but he was married with a child in 1494, so he was born around 1473. After his father's death he was made a ward of John Denton. John had married Isabel Brome, his uncle Phillip's widow. Nicholas married the daughter of John and Isabel.

Notes: Eight manuscripts of Syon Abbey contain explicit ownership inscriptions. A printed copy of Catherine of Siena’s The Orcharde of Syon, bears the inscription on the final pastedown, ‘This boke perteynyth to syster Elyzabeth Stryckland, professyd in Syon’. Another book, a British Library incunable copy of Nicholas Love’s The Myrroure of the Blessed Lyf of Ihesu Cryste, contains‘Susan Purefeye owethe thys booke’. London, British Library, MS Harley 993 states,‘Thys boke is suster anne colvylle’ on the front flyleaf and‘D Anne Colvylle’ on the end leaf, in a formal hand. These statements of ownership from Elizabeth Strickland, Susan Purefoy, and Anne Colville imply that despite the prohibitions against private property, some concept of ownership existed among the Syon sisters, and that the sisters wanted to mark their ownership.Her name is among the 52 nuns who received a pension after the dissolution.

Notes: came to Virginia from England in the "George" when he was 43 in 1621. In 1652, he was a member of the council. He was commissioner of Elizabeth City County in 1626, and was burgess of the lower part of Elizabeth City County 1629-1630. He was a member of the King's Council in 1631, and principal commander of Elizabeth City County in 1629. In 1635, the mutiny in Virginia was reported by this same Captain Purifoy.

Notes: MP. Though he had family connexions with the earls of Shrewsbury, Leicester and Rutland, Purefoy no doubt owed his return at Beverley to his elder brother Humphrey, a law member of the council in the north, and an admirer of the lord president, the 3rd Earl of Huntingdon. He gradually built up a not inconsiderable estate for his son and heir, Gamaliel. All his land purchases, beginning in 1575 with a moiety of the manor of Bramcote, were of parts of the old Zouche estates, mostly in the parish of Bulkington. To Bramcote he added a moiety of Weston-in-Arden manor, and, in 1601, the manor of Wolvershill. He also bought a moiety of Wibtoft manor.

Notes: It is not easy to explain Purefoy’s return for Clitheroe, and it is uncertain in any case whether the MP was the man whose particulars appear above, or his cousin and namesake, a younger son of the senior branch of the family, who was a member of the Inner Temple and servant of the Earl of Rutland. Perhaps the former may be preferred because of a tenuous link with the 3rd Earl of Huntingdon, president of the council in the north, who knew his uncles Humphrey and William. Huntingdon could certainly have secured Purefoy’s return and it is highly likely that he spent several years in the service of this uncle Humphrey, who was himself a legal member of the council in the north. Purefoy died unmarried in 1627 and was buried in Caldecote church, where his cousin and executor, Gamaliel Purefoy, erected a monument.
