Notes: illegitimate son of Thomas, 2nd Lord Dacre of Gillesland, K.G. In 1542 war broke out between England and Scotland. James V being on the side of Rome, was unfavourable to his uncle, the English King, whose policy was to renew the claims made by Edward I to superiority over the kingdom of Scotland. A Scottish army entered the West Marches of England and was put to rout on 14 Nov 1542, by a few hundred borderers under Sir Thomas Dacre, the Bastard, and Jack Musgrave of Bewcastle. Sir Thomas Dacre was rewarded in the following year by a grant of some of the possessions of the dissolved House of Lanercost. This illegitimate son's will is at York, 9 May 1552, proved 12 Jun 1556, and from him is descended the Dacres of Lanercost (see Burn and Nicolson, ii, 503).
Lady Jane Carlisle, the third wife of Sir Thomas, married him late in her life. Prior to that, she had what has been described as a “liaison” with Sir John Lowther (b. 1488 - d. 1553), bearing him two daughters, Mabel and Jane, and eventually serving as his executor upon his death in 1553. Their relationship seems to have begun in the 1540s during his tenure as constable of Carlisle Castle. Well after Lowther’s death, in about 1565, Jane became wife of Thomas Dacre of Lanercost. Lady Jane Dacre seems to have been wealthy in her own right, having inherited money and property from both her Carlisle relations and Sir John Lowther. She had a sister, Elizabeth (b. 1510- d. 1564), who is sometimes said to have been the daughter of William Carlisle, 2nd Lord Carlisle of Torthorald, Dumfrieshire, but Lord Carlisle was a Scot and neither Jane nor Elizabeth are listed among his children. In Mar 1564/5, Jane traveled to Scotland to attend the wedding of her nephew, John Sempill or Semple (Elizabeth’s son by Robert, 3rd lord Sempill, legitimized after their 1546 marriage), to Mary Livingston, Queen Mary’s lady in waiting. The Queen called John Sempill “the Englishman” because he had been born in the south to an English mother. It may be at this time that Jane received the gift of a chain worth £60, possibly from Mary Queen of Scots herself. Jane was apparently wealthy enough to live independently during the decade before her eventual marriage, unusual for a gentlewoman of the sixteenth century. She is reputed to have had a richly decorated house and a collection of paintings. Jane and Sir Thomas Dacre appear to have had a happy marriage. After his death, however, Jane was involved in a bitter lawsuit with one of Dacre’s sons by an earlier marriage. Her will dated 7 Jan 1575 survives.

George DACRE (5º B. Gillesland/ 4º B. Greystoke)
Born: ABT 1560
Died: 17 May 1569
Notes: was entrusted to his guardian, the Duke of Norfolk. Young George shared his brief childhood at Thetford with his three sisters who were prospective co-heiresses. Fell off a vaulting wooden horse, upon which he practised to leap, aged nine and died, which meant that the vast Dacre estates which covered great tracks of the north of England- including 70,000 acres of the Barony of Gillesland, lands in Cumberland including Greystoke and Dacre, 20,000 acres around Morpeth and 30,000 acres in Yorkshire- all came under the control of the Howard family. The children's uncle, Lord Leonard Dacre, was so incensed that his claim to be male heir was filed in the court whose marshal was the Duke of Norfolk himself. The court was therefore adapted for the Duke's defence, but the final verdict prohibited Lord Dacre's descent to the barony.

Notes: within ten years a double crisis overtook the Grindals of St Bees. Robert Grindal, his wife, and their only surviving son all died within three weeks of each other in 1568. Robert left the farm to his second daughter, Anne. "Her father in his testament willed her in all things to be directed by me", wrote Edmund Grindal, brother of Robert, although the text of Robert's will does not quite bear this out. Contrary to her uncle's wishes, Anne married William Dacre, although she was only eighteen and her father not a year dead. Shortly afterwards, in 1569-70, William joined his cousin Leonard Dacre in the northern rising known as "Dacre's Raid", which started as a struggle with the Howards over the inheritance of Naworth Castle and the barony of Gilsland. The Dacres were defeated and fled, and their lands were forfeited to the Crown. Leonard Dacre died three years later, and William was pardoned and settled down at St Bees. It is likely that at this time Anne and her husband had the inside northwest wall of their house decorated with griffins, supporters of the Dacre arms, and carried out other improvements, mentioned below. The painting is possibly out of the same workshop as another in the house which Thomas Dacre converted out of the west range of Lanercost Priory. William Dacre died in 1583, the same year as Edmund Grindal. Had he lived, he would have been a governor of the grammar school which the Archbishop founded at St Bees. Anne married again, into another gentry family, that of Thomas Wybergh. Although she had issue by Thomas, the Grindal estates in St Bees did not pass to the Wyberghs and thence to the Lowthers. When new leases were granted to the St Bees tenants in 1609 (close to the expiry of the 1560 leases), Anne's eldest child by William Dacre, Eleanor or Helena Dacre, was holding a messuage or fermhold called Grindall's tenement containing three and a quarter oxgangs situate in the town of St Bees, late in the occupation of Thomas Wybergh and sometime of Robert Grindal deceased. The holding had grown since 1560 to 53 or 69 statute acres, but so had others.
