George NEVILLE (Archbishop of York)

Born: ABT 1433, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England

Died: 8 Jun 1476, Blyth, Northumberland, England

Notes: Archbishop of York. Younger brother of the great Earl of Warwick, was one of those Englishmen of noble houses by whom the high places of the Church were, at this time, for the most part, filled. This was partly, it would seem (and especially in the case of the primacy), as a result of the deliberate determination of the Pope and the Crown to band together the Church and the nobles "against the spiritual and civil democracy, on one side of Wat Tyler and Jack Straw, on the other of the extreme followers of Wycliffe" Neville is a striking representative of the feudal churchman. Received his education at Balliol College, Oxford, where, on taking the degree of Master of Arts in October, 1452, the sumptuous entertainment was given, recorded by Wood, its historian (lib. i. p. 219). When only fourteen years old, the nobility of his descent induced the Pope, Nicholas V, to grant him a dispensation for holding a canonry in the Church of Salisbury, together with one in that of York. He was nominated Bishop of Exeter at the age of twenty-three (1455). His Register of institutions commences with 10 Ap that year; for the primate Thomas Bourchier, his cousin, had already committed to him the spiritualities; but, notwithstanding his election, confirmation, and power of jurisdiction, by the special order of the Pope, his consecration was to be deferred until he should enter his twenty-seventh year; and it was eventually performed on 25 Nov 1458. In the meanwhile he had the precaution to commit the administration of the diocese to experienced theologians. In Mar 1459, he was installed in his episcopal throne. His Register proves that he conferred holy orders in Crediton Church on 19 May, and in his own cathedral on 22 Sep that year; that early in Dec he quitted the diocese for ever; and that on 15th of that month he had arrived at Coventry on his route to London. King Henry VI, on 25 Jul 1460, delivered to him the Great Seal, and it must be admitted that he disloyally employed the commanding influence of his station against his too confiding sovereign. For this treachery he may have considered himself recompensed by King Edward IV, who reappointed him to the chancellorship on 5 Mar 1461, and translated him to the archbishopric of York in 1465.

Portions of the chapter-house at Exeter were erected by him and by his predecessor: In the year 1465, Neville was translated to the See of York, on which occasion his installation-feast, presented one of the most marvellous culinary displays on record, famous in the annals of gastronomy. The list of provisions, included 330 tuns of beer, 104 tuns of wine, 80 fat oxen, 1004 sheep, 3000 geese, 100 peafowl, 4000 woodcocks, besides 8 seals and 4 porpoises.

The Archbishop, like his great brother, more than once changed sides during the strife of the Wars of the Roses. After the final defeat and death of Henry VI, he was detained in custody for a month or two and was then suffered to resume all his honours. Within the year, however (1472), he was again seized at the More, in Hertfordshire, a magnificent palace which he had himself built and furnished with the utmost splendour. The King, Edward IV, had agreed to visit the Archbishop there, for the sake of hunting; but, the day before his intended arrival, sent thither to seize Neville and to take possession of all his treasure, among the rest a "precious mitre" of enormous value, from which a royal crown was afterwards constructed. For four years, Archbishop Neville was detained in prison at Calais and at Guines and, soon after his release, in 1476, died at Blithfield in Staffordshire, of a broken heart, "ex angore animi interiit" (Polydore Virgil's 'History,' p. 526).

Catherine NEVILLE (B. Ashby-Zouche)

Born: ABT 1435, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England

Died: 22 Nov 1503 / AFT 25 Mar 1504

Buried: Ashby de la Zouche

Notes: left a widow at the age of eighteen. She did not, however, remain a widow for long; shortly before 6 Feb 1462 her brother Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, arranged a marriage between her and William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, a close friend of Edward IV. On 9 Apr 1483, King Edward died; his son Edward V and kingdom were placed under the guardianship of his youngest brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester. It was Catherine's husband William Hastings who advised Richard to take the young King Edward V into protective custody immediately following the death of Edward IV. It was about this time that Catherine's husband became the lover of Jane Shore, a former mistress of both the late King Edward IV and her son-in-law, Thomas Grey, Marquess of Dorset. She encouraged him to enter into a conspiracy with the Woodville family against Gloucester. Richard, upon discovering Hastings' treachery ordered his immediate execution, which took place on 13 Jun 1483 at the Tower of London. Several weeks later, Richard sealed an indenture, swearing to take Catherine directly under his protection and to "secure for her the enjoyment of her husband's lands, goods, privileges, and the custody not only of their heir until the boy came of age but also the wardship of the young Earl of Shrewsbury who was married to their daughter, Anne". Richard assured Catherine that Hastings would never be attainted, and that she would be defended against any attempt by intimidation or fraud to deprive her of her rights. Shortly after Hastings' death, on 22 Jun, Richard proclaimed himself King of England. Catherine never remarried.

Richard "King Maker" NEVILLE (1║ E. Warwick)

Born: 22 Nov 1428, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England

Died: 14 Apr 1471, Battle of Barnet, Hertfordshire, England

Notes: Knight of the Garter. Lord of Middleham Castle, North Yorkshire. He was that Earl of Warwick, to whom the House of York owe their ascent to the throne. He also bore the titles of lord Monthermer, great chamberlain and High Admiral of England, lord Warden of the north marches toward Scotland and High Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster, and among his many titles, was also known as "the King maker". He was the richest man in England outside the royal family, and he used his wealth and power to help depose the "Lancastrian" Henry VI in favor of the "Yorkist" Edward IV, and then later to place Henry VI back on the throne. He was a man of invincible courage and took delight in dangers, engaged his country in a fresh civil war in which he lost his life. He was slain at the battle of garnet, 14 Apr 1471, though some authors affirm that he was murdered by his own party.

John NEVILLE (1░ M. Montagu)

Born: ABT 1431, Salisbury, Wiltshire

Acceded: 1461

Died: 13 Apr 1471, Battle of Barnet

Notes: Knight of the Garter. A Yorkist leader in the Wars of the Roses, best-known for eliminating Lancastrian resistance in the north of England during the early part of the reign of Edward IV of England. A younger son of Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury and Alice Montagu, Countess of Salisbury, and a brother of Richard, Earl of Warwick the Kingmaker. He fought at the Battle of Blore Heath and was captured and imprisoned by the Lancastrians. After the Yorkist victory at Northampton he was released, but was captured again at the second Battle of St Albans. Following his second release from imprisonment, he led the Yorkist forces in the north of England, defeating the Lancastrians at Hedgeley Moor and again at Hexham (both 1465). In reward for driving out the Lancastrians, Neville was created Earl of Northumberland. This title had long been held by the Percy family, but they were in disgrace. However, when Henry Percy was rehabilitated in 1470, Neville was forced to give up the earldom and many important offices in favor of his former foe. He was in compensation created Marquess of Montagu, but without suitable estates to support such a dignity. Now set against Edward IV, he joined his brother Warwick in the restoration of Henry VI. Montagu returned to high office in the north, but was killed at the Battle of Barnet, while endeavoring to succor his brother Warwick. They were both laid in state at Westminster, London, and afterward were carried to Bisham Abbey and buried among their ancestors.
